- SOFTWOODS Softwoods are wood and lumber that are milled from conifer trees. Scientifically known as Gymnosperms. Conifer trees are any trees that have needles and produce cones. Examples of popular softwood trees used in woodworking, construction, and furniture are pine, cedar, redwood, etc.
- HARDWOODS Hardwoods come from any tree that does not produce needles or cones. These trees are known as deciduous trees and more scientifically known as angiosperms. Hardwood trees are trees that produce leaves and seeds. Examples of hardwood are oak. maple, cherry, mahogany, and walnut. Hardwoods are not necessarily stronger than softwoods but many species are well known for their beautiful and distinct wood grain pattern. Some woods are considered to be hardwoods that are not deciduous trees such as Bamboo and Palm.
- ENGINEERED WOOD These woods do not occur naturally in the environment but instead are manufactured. These boards are generally made with wood which is manipulated to have certain qualities or features and is also known as composite wood. Engineered woods are often treated through chemical or heat processes to produce wood products that can meet certain seizes that would be difficult to achieve from nature. Examples of these woods are plywood, composite wood, medium-density fiberboard, and oriented strand board.
